I Switched Sides: How a UK and USA Attorney Found Her True Calling

I was working at one of the top law firms in New York City, but I had become increasingly frustrated with my job as an attorney. Then, one day when I was working on a big case, something clicked. In that moment, I realized that law had always been important to me—it just wasn’t what I was doing at work. It was then that I decided to leave my job and pursue something new. My clients helped me get through my adjustment period by reminding me what it’s like to be a lawyer who actually cares about the clients she works with and cases she takes on.

  1. The Basics of What I Do

Before starting my own law firm, I worked as an attorney in the U.S. and the UK. I have experience with both U.S. federal law, as well as English law (which is what governs most of England). My clients range from small-business owners to multinational corporations, so I can help you with legal matters in your home country or mine!

2. Why I Made the Switch

I have always been drawn to law, which is why I decided to study it in college. However, as I started my career, I found myself wanting more than just being an attorney. I wanted to make sure that the work that I was doing made a difference in people's lives. This is when I began to look at my future differently. One day, while reading an article about how lawyers were making the switch from practicing law to working with startups, something clicked for me.

3. What My New Job Entails

After more than ten years in the corporate law sector, I decided to take the plunge and switch sides. Now, I'm an attorney-at-law with my own firm that offers legal assistance to people who have been wrongly accused of crimes. It's such a privilege to be able to help people who are going through tough times, especially when it feels like there is no hope for them.

4. The Best Parts of My New Job

My favorite part of my new job is the opportunities to collaborate with colleagues across the globe. And because I am based in Miami, I get to interact with clients from all over Central America. The Worst Parts of My New Job: The worst part about my new job is that I don't get to work as much with .
Advice for Others Thinking About Switching Jobs: If you are thinking about switching jobs but are worried about getting your foot in the door, know that many companies have relocation packages that can help you move abroad.

5. The Most Challenging Aspect of My New Job

My favorite part of my new job is how it's allowed me to grow as an individual. In my previous position, I was doing administrative work, so it wasn't really focused on anything creative or intellectually stimulating - just getting things done. Working at the law firm has given me the opportunity to use my skills in a way that will allow me to advance in this industry. I also love working with people, which is another thing that my old job didn't provide much opportunity for. My least favorite aspect of the job right now is being constantly stressed out about deadlines because there are so many moving pieces when you're running multiple cases simultaneously.

6. What the Future Holds

After graduating from law school, I knew that I loved the field of law. I was fortunate to find an amazing job as an attorney with one of the top firms in London. Fast forward two years, and I'm quitting my well-paying, stable job to pursue my true calling. My plans now are to move back to the States and focus on becoming a criminal defense attorney for those who can't afford legal representation. This is the future that excites me most because it's what gives me purpose and fulfills me both professionally and personally. What will your future hold?
